Building Virtual Worlds: Kaiji Tower Arena

Kaiji Tower Arena

Building Virtual Worlds is a a first semester class at Carnegie Mellon University’s Master in Entertainment Technology program. The class puts student in small groups to design and make a game or interactive experience.

Assignment 2 pushed me outside my comfort zone. We were tasked with making an AR experience for a naive guest without instructions. My team came up with an obstacle course tower. The player would walk across real life wooden planks over lava (no real) in order to collect coins and reach the bottom of the tower. We called the game “Kaiji Tower Arena” because the coin collecting/competition aspect of the game was inspired by the Kaiji manga.

Through the tower, players meet 3 personas; the asshole (red), the crybaby (blue), and the friend (yellow). The “asshole” stands in you way and yells at you, provoking the player to push him off. After learning this mechanic, the player then has the option to throw off the “crybaby” but doesn’t have to in order to progress. Finally the “friend” character will stand near one of the coins at the bottom level and if you don’t kill him, they will collect that coin for you so you don’t have to walk on the planks more.

On this project I helped with production, game design and focused on 3D art. Here are my contributions:

  • Monster Host 3D model (version 1)
  • Monster 2D sketch
  • Tower and interior architecture 3D models(version 1)
  • Log obstacle 3D model (final version)
  • Coin 3D model (final version)
  • Log animation
  • Blade obstacle 3D model (final version)
  • Blade animation
  • Logo
  • Editing the intro video
  • Voice acting of the “crybaby” character
  • Real World plank painting
  • Real world plank assembly
  • Documentation

Our game was also chosen to be in Carnegie Mellon’s Entertainment Technology Festival. As my team refined our models and game play, we also had to prepare a room for our game to be played. I came in helping with the room floorplan, design/made most of cardboard cutouts, and helped host the game. This was an amazing opportunity to have people come and enjoy the game we all worked so hard. Take a look!
